2 birds neglected in Woodhaven pet store

WOODHAVEN — The owner of a Woodhaven pet store was charged last week with failing to feed a parakeet and a canary in the shop, a spokeswoman for Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.
A special agent with the ASPCA visited David Barkley’s shop, New York Aquarium at 108-06 Jamaica Ave. in Woodhaven, Nov. 25 and saw a dead, emaciated parakeet sitting on the top of a cage.
The parakeet was taken to an animal hospital for a necropsy later that day, where a doctor determined the parakeet died from malnutrition, according to the criminal complaint.
The agent visited the shop again Jan. 19 and found a lethargic canary that appeared near death, the complaint said.The ASPCA then took custody of the canary, the complaint said.
Barkley, 36, of 88-37 Sabre St. in Queens Village, was arraigned Jan. 19 on charges of torturing and injuring animals and failure to provide sustenance before Queens Criminal Court Judge Lenora Gerald, who set bail at $3,500, the spokeswoman said.
